Links and News and Two Things Green
Links:
1. The Onion's take on Dave Matthews' recent efforts (which we here at FWG agree with entirely).
2. Mainstream US paper actually pays attention to Canada!
3. My regular dose of Avian Flu pandemic paranoia.
News:
1. Arm wrestling Champion du Monde. Last night at the pink, blue, and green Karaoke bar, while standing in a mid-sized herd of gaijin, I was approached by a seriously height-challenged man wishing to arm wrestle. Intentions (his) were communicated through mime which he proved to be adept at. Intentions (mine) were counter-communicated through the phrase, "Bring it." Down we sat at a table near the photo booth. Kabonk. I won. Over like that. We stood up. He bowed and left. I bowed and crowned myself undisputed arm wrestling champion of Hondo City. Let me tell you, it feels good.
2. Japanese insects very noisy. Honestly, being a boy from a northern country and specifically an area of that country where the frogs only sing a few months a year and the crickets don't get up to much noise-making at all, one of the best things about living here is the wall of insect sounds summer presents. Nothing is more beautiful than cicadas giving it for all their worth. They have the power to turn simple acts, wiping sweat from the brow, turning to look at Kate, or closing the eyes, into odysseys of nostalgia and longing. Hip Hip, cicadas.
3. Semi-sedentary man goes mountain biking with extremely fit friends. Yup. And it was incredibly fun though I had to bail early, go home, and have a long nap. In any event, two of those friends have a blog and pictures and write-ups of their advanetures (kayaking and riding and climbing all over the world) reside at their very interesting Gumbies blog.
