Happy New Year

We spent New Year's in the city of Kagoshima which overlooks Japan's most active Volcano. This photo and the next are pictures of post cards. The volcano is on the island of Sakurajima. An eruption in 1914 buried several villages and expanded the old boundary of the island by more than 500 meters, filling in the ocean and burying an nearby islet.

On New Year's Eve we went to a pachinko place, lost some money, won a Winnie the Pooh key chain (at least Kate did), and took in the lights, noise and smoke. After that, at midnight, we went to a shrine, rang the bell to atone for our pachinko playing ways, and listened to the priests chanting and praying.

We're wishing everyone a healthy, proseperous year in 2005. May you all win the lottery (and give us half).
