Sea Turtle Shell?
We found this shell on the beach shown below. I was pretty excited. The length of the shell is about eight inches, and the width is about four.
It's pretty old and as you can see, the outer "scutes" are coming off. According to the internet, turtle shells are made of bone just like the human skeleton. I never would have guessed that the shell was actually capable of growth. I guess I thought turtles molted the way crabs do.
Trying to identify the species of turtle this is proved difficult. I want to believe it is a sea turtle (because they are such lovely animals) but the front end doesn't appear flat enough.
